SF Book Launch – Pyro Canyon

It’s launch day today for the two Editor’s Choice anniversary anthologies at Carina Press. While Volume 1, edited by Angela James,  is devoted exclusively to romance (and is amazing, according to early reviews), Volume 2  is where all the genre fun is at.

Last October, editor Deb Nemeth invited four returning authors to represent our various genres—paranormal mystery (Janni Nell), murder mystery (Shirley Wells), action adventure (Julie Moffett), and science fiction (yours truly)—stipulating only that the stories be novella length, non-romance and linked to our existing series.

Needless to say, it isn’t every day you get INVITED to submit a story for publication, or get to sign a contract before you’ve written a single word of said story (not counting the synopsis), let alone represent your favourite genre like this. So I had to come up with something extra special…

PYRO CANYON

It’s a galaxy-wide red alert…again.

And it’s Corporal Gus Trillion’s job at the Propaganda Office to drum up recruits. But the colonists have heard one too many calls to arm to care. Disabled in battle and on the verge of burnout, Gus feels pretty apathetic himself—until his reporter friend Lyssa Baltacha stumbles upon top secret satellite footage indicating that the treacherous Sheikers are planning to invade human-occupied space. Now Gus and Lyssa must find a way to galvanize humanity to rise up against the enemy—before it’s too late…

37,000 words

Now, the blurb doesn’t mention precisely how they plan to galvanize humanity, but I think readers are going to find that the most fun part of the story. It involves the recruitment of two retired fighter pilots—sorry, legendary fighter pilots—named Cardie and Brink, whose mysterious decision to leave the corps many years ago becomes the riddle for Gus and Lyssa to solve.

The riddle of Pyro Canyon.

It’s the tale of fallen heroes, hope and redemption in the shadow of interstellar war.

Hope you enjoy the ride!

Pyro Canyon is available as a single novella here or anywhere ebooks are sold,  or as part of the Editor’s Choice Vol. 2 anthology here.

And to those readers wondering where Pyro Canyon fits into the Cosmic Sparks series, it’s set roughly twenty years after Sparks in Cosmic Dust, and features at least one major character with a strong link to those events. It’s also set after Cyber Sparks (due out August 27th).
